2nd Dan Shotokan karate

Sergio started training in karate in 1979 in the Wado style with Sensei Hideto Hironaka, who had moved from Japan to teach in Brazil. He was awarded 1st Dan in January 1994 through the Brazilian Confederation of Karate (affiliated to the World Karate Federation). Since then, he has taken part in many karate tournaments, at regional, national and international level. He competed as one of the youngest seniors in the Pan-American tournament, in Brazil in 1982 aged just 18, followed by the International Open Karate Championships, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Sergio started practising Shotokan in Brazil under Sensei Fernando Malheiros, a student of Sensei Luis T. Watanabe's (1972 World Champion). In 1997, Sergio moved to Germany where he joined the karate club of Konstanz University, under the JKA Germany, where he become a member of the university squad, competing in the National University Karate tournament in 1998. In 1999 Sergio moved to Australia, where he initially joint the JKA club in Melbourne under Sensei Nijimura, and later joint the Shotokan Karate Coalition, training with Sensei Keith Geyer (from South Africa). He passed 2nd Dan in June 2003, under the Shotokan Karate Coalition. In Australia, he competed in the 22nd JKA Australian Nationals Karate Championships in 2001.

Besides karate, Sergio has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, in the Alliance school. He joinded CUKC when he moved to England in 2005. Sergio has a PhD in Computer Science and work for British Telecom, in the research and development labs, in England.
