As well as the regular training the club maintains a strong programme of guest instructors (which in recent times have included Frank Brennan and Matt Price), enters many competitions, and organizes almost weekly socials.

We are fortunate to be able to welcome a large number of guest instructors to the club, with specialities ranging from traditional Shotokan and competition training to close-contact fighting, bo training, and sport karate. An email list is maintained to advertise these events — if you would like to join the list please contact the Secretary. The club enters a huge number of competitions, of various sorts, including the Varsity Match against Oxford, BUCS, and many KUGB competitions.

Below is a list of all upcoming events in the club. Please let us know if there is an event that is not here but you think should be added.

Club Competition
Sunday, 28 October, 2018
This is our annual Club Competition. It is open to all members of the club, no matter what grade they are.

It is a great opportunity to gain some competition experience in a very safe and familiar setting. Hence we encourage everyone to compete. Even white belts are very welcome to join! The categories usually cinclude individual kata and kumite as well as kihon ippon kumite for kyu grades. Note that the dan grade kata categories will be all style, so you don't have to perform a Shotokan kata!

You can sign up for the competition here.

KUGB National Student Championships
Saturday, 10 November, 2018
This is a national KUGB championship for all current students. There are Kata and Kumite categories, both as individual and team. The championship takes place in Chesterfield. We usually organise one or two cars to drive over on Saturday morning and will return the same day. If you are interested in competing please contact either the captains or the president.

I would strongly encourage all student members who wish to compete in the Varsity squad next year to compete at the Student Nationals because of the exposure it will give you. Conversely, if you are new to competing and would like to test yourself against other karatekas in the country, this is your chance! The people you go up against will be from within your grade category, so kyu grades need not worry about meeting a dan grade in a match.
