Annual General Meeting
The club holds an Annual General Meeting at the end of Lent Term. All members are welcome to attend the meeting and are encouraged to do so. Members of the club can question current committee members about the administration and running of the club and the committee presents a summary of the year's achievements and finances. Candidates for positions on the new committee are invited to make a short speech to the attendees outlining why they are suitable for the role. This is in addition to submitting a written application to be published on this page and via email to the members of the club. Voting for the elections will take place at the AGM, with email votes accepted from members who cannot attend.
Candidates' statements for the 2010-11 Committee
President
- Mingwei Tan (Peterhouse) —
Why I should be President: 1. I'm there. I'm at most trainings and socials, and I think there's nothing worse than an absent president and nothing better than one who's there and enthusiastic at making people want to train and newcomers join the club. And being at club events is about more than just making people be hard-core karateka, but also letting people just enjoy the club, and that is what I want to let everyone continue doing. 2. I'm keen! Better than just attending them, I enjoy trainings and socials enough to want to have a hand in organising them. Anything from normal and guest trainings to gradings and Varsity, I want to be involved, and what better way to do that than run for President? 3. I've got experience. I was chairperson of the Green Club and Medical Society in school, and am undergraduate secretary of the Kelvin Club and JCR International Rep at Peterhouse, as well as women's squash captain, so I think I've got the organisational skills it takes to make sure the club runs smoothly. So that's it! I'm at club events, and I enjoy them enough to want to organise them, which I think I've got enough experience to be able to do.
Men's Captain
- Liam Gabb (Emmanuel College) —
After a massively successful year for CUKC; with a fourth consecutive Varsity win and our first ever kumite shield from the Centrals competition, I felt it was time I gave something back to the club. As Men's Captain I would keep working on and improving the already strong squad to continue expanding and defending an already excellent array of trophies. To do this I would look to focus on continued fitness training and the further strengthening of the team spirit, which has been so quintessential to the CUKC's success. I would also look to continue the expansion of the squad, with new karateka already showing their worth at competitions such as varsity! Following the greatly successful year of Nim Sukumar (our current captain) whose enthusiasm was a great inspiration for me, I wish to help inspire a new generation of karateka and play my part in the CUKC legacy!
Women's Captain
- Gosia Stanislawek (Jesus College) —
I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of CUKC over the last two years. As Women's Captain, I would strive to continue the club's success in teaching its members the art of karate-do. In my experience, CUKC is the perfect place for complete beginners to take up the sport as well as experienced karateka to further develop their skills in kumite and kata and within different competition rules. My aim for the coming year would be on the one hand to continue attracting new members in order to expand the club's popularity and sphere of influence (and thus improving the world because more people get to do glorious karate). On the other hand I will work with more experienced karateka in striving to maintain and, if possible after so many successful years of competing, raise CUKC's profile in competitions throughout the year. I feel that next year's Varsity match is of particular importance for us to extablish our ultimate dominion over The Other Place and secure a fifth consecutive Varsity win. In practical terms, I would encourage squad members to come to as many squad sessions as possible. On the social side of things I would be interested in having more events involving the lower and higher grades so that the club feels more united.
Vice-President
- Craig Woodhead (Trinity College) —
I would the love the opportunity of becoming CUKC Vice-president and being a member of the committee. As Vice-President I would carry out the roles and responsiblities of Vice-president to the utmost best of my ability - arranging regular kit orders and helping out at gradings. In addition I would look to extend the current range of personalised stash available to club members to be more in line with other Cambridge University sports clubs. This could include T-shirts, polo shirts and track suit bottoms - because you can never have enough stash. I would be an active committee member and would offer my complete help and support to the club.
Secretary
- Tiina Pajuste (Queens' College) —
As Secretary I would build on the great success of the previous Committee. I would support the work of the Committee in every way and offer my skills and experience whenever needed. I have previously been involved in several club committees both in Estonia and Finland, so this type of work is not unfamiliar to me. I am responsible and reliable, but promise to spice up boring discussions with inappropriate, yet entertaining comments :P As a PhD student in the social sciences (law), I have the independence to organize my work around my hobbies (don't tell my supervisor!) so finding the time for Committee work is not a problem. To sum up, I'd love the opportunity to get more involved in the club as the Secretary and I promise to do my best if elected.
Treasurer
- Sean McClintock (Sidney Sussex College) —
I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of CUKC this year, it's full of great people, who throw cracking socials, and most importantly we beat Oxford. I couldn't have asked for a better first-time karate experience. As Treasurer I would carry out my role to the best of my ability, consulting with committee members old and new to make the most of our finances. I'm a second year mathmo with previous experience of organising finances for charities, and two summers' worth of accounting internships under my belt, and I would love to be a member of the committee this year and give a bit back to the club.
Social Secretaries
- Dominic Stephen (ARU) —
Why I would like to be a social secretary? My name is Dominic Stephan and I study an M.Sc. in International Logistics at Anglia Ruskin University. I am German, almost six weeks in Cambridge and enjoy the Karate training each week from the University of Cambridge very much. For me it feels like home when I was training in Germany with friends. The last social event which took place as a 'varsity' in Oxford (as supporter) was
extraordinary for me and I asked myself: Can I be an ambassador for social events? The answer is: Yes I can! I would love to organise social events, which will be unforgettable and funny. With these events, which can be a pub trip, a formal, a barbecue, a christmas party, ... or anything else I would like to pursue the uniqueness of our karate club.
- Jimmy Bost (Jesus College) —
'Oh go on then, you've twisted my arm. I'll do it as long as you're sure I don't have to do much until Michaelmas.'
