Competition Report

Last Saturday, 17th of February , a small but strong squad represented CUKC at the BUCS national championships 2018. Heng Xuan, Vlad, Dan and Philip were well prepared and ready to face this highly competitive competition featuring the strongest university clubs from all around the UK.

The first event for our members was Intermediate Male Kata. Here Philip faced strong competition, including some of last year's medallists. However, several convincing performances of Jion and Bassai Dai secured him a place in the final. Here he demonstrated the variety of katas he had prepared performing a sharp Empi, but unfortunately only coming 2nd against last year's winner.

In the Senior Male Kata category Heng Xuan impressed the judges with strong demonstrations of Empi and Matsumura-Bassai, safely bringing him through his first two rounds. Unfortunately a 2/3 split-decision ended his run in this event in round three.
Facing one of last year's medallists in his first round Dan was similarly unfortunate despite a convincing performance of Suparimpei.

The last event for our squad was Mixed Team Kata. Heng Xuan, Vlad and Philip have trained for weeks and prepared two katas: Jion and Empi. Well synchronised they went through three elimination rounds without any problems. Stepping on the mats for the finals was one of their designated goals for the day, partly because they were eager to perform their creative and powerful Empi-Bunkai. Though the crowd was obviously well entertained by their strong performance the judges only granted them 2nd place against the KUGB club of Sunderland University.

Overall CUKC gave an amazing performance and returned with 2 well deserved silver medals. Congratulations to all competitors and keep up the training!
