Nim Sukumar

Nim Sukumar started his karate training at the age of 8 at the shito-ryu club down his road. In 2005 at the age of 15 he graded to shodan under Nidaime-Sokei Sensei of Kusano Ha Shito-ryu. It was after gaining his shodan that things became a little more serious for Nim. In 2008 he spent two months of his gap year living in a room on top of a dojo, supported by the Kusano family, in Shiga, Japan, training in traditional shito-ryu karate.

Nim was inspired by the many practitioners who had made karate their life, and at the end of his two month stay was put forward for, and passed, his nidan examination in front of Sokei Kusano Sensei.

Nim shortly after joined CUKC and for the first time was exposed to competition karate. He enjoyed a year training hard and competing even harder with CUKC before accepting the captaincy for 2009-2010. In his first year at CUKC Nim's competition successes have included team kumite gold and under-21 kumite silver at KUGB Centrals, and he was a member of the Cambridge A-team who were victorious against Oxford in the Varsity Match.

During vacations Nim instructs at his home shito-ryu club. Nim maintains the philosophy that he will always be a student of karate, as there is always something to learn.
