Gosia Stanislawek

Gosia started shotokan karate at the age of 12. After various instructors who would come over to teach a group of kids interested in the sport in what can only be described as an interesting place to learn karate, she moved on to a proper dojo. Conveniently, the dojo was a three minute jog from home and sessions were taught by one of the best karatekas in Cyprus, Sensei Petros Mavrovouniotes. Terrified by all the older tough men, she nevertheless fell in love with karate. She graded to Shodan in 2005.

After the limited opportunities to compete in karate in Cyprus, Gosia was excited to begin competing when she joined CUKC in October 2008. In her first year of training with CUKC, Gosia won a number of medals at KUGB Student Nationals 2008 and 2009, and Karate England Nationals 2009. Her first Varsity Match, in which she won women's individual kata, and Cambridge as a whole won a clean sweep of victories against Oxford, was particularly enjoyable and rewarding.
