Emma started Shotokan karate at the age of 13 at the Leeds Karate Academy under instruction of Senseis Nick Heald and Matt Price. She graded to shodan in March 2007 and was selected for the KUGB Junior Kumite Squad in early 2008, taking second place in the Grand Slam the following month, a feat repeated in 2009 before winning the event in 2010.
Emma was fighting for Cambridge within weeks of arriving as a fresher in 2009 against former team mates from the Northern Regions Squad — fighting a team coached by her sensei of six years Matt Price — whilst cheering for team mates some of whom she was meeting for the first time. Emma was not only encouraged to fight for the club, but was rather forcibly encouraged to become a part of the ladies' team kata, along with decorated kata champions Madeleine Wood and Gosia Stanislawek, a decision questioned by Emma but one which paid off with medals at Student Nationals, BUCS and Central Regions, not only in team kumite, but team kata also.
Having just missed out on an individual kata medal to CUKC's own Tegwen Ecclestone, Emma is still intent upon bringing home a kata medal of her own for CUKC one day, but her first year at Cambridge has also been her most successful in terms of individual kumite, with gold medals at regional, English, and British Championships. The highlight of her time at CUKC so far was winning team kata and beating Oxford's Captain in kumite at the 2010 Varsity Match, being part of the Cambridge team that won all three team titles and brought back the Enoeda cup for the fourth year running.
