Competition Report

Weekend of Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th February 2020, CUKC took 18 members of the club to Sheffield to compete at BUCS. There were strong showings from everyone competing.

Starting off the day was the team kata event, with Putu, Dan and Alex performing strong with Annan. Narrowly losing their first round, they smashed both their repechage round and bunkai round to win bronze.

In individual kata, there was strong competition in all categories. In women's novice kata Liming lost first round, and intermediate kata Beth missed out on her first round. In men's intermediate kata, Bence lost his first round, yet Dao lost first round then won his repegarge round to go on to beat the competition in the semifinal for the bronze medal. In men's senior kata, Putu, Dan and Jamie all performed strongly but unfortunately didn't make top 4 on their mats. In women's senior kata, Millie lost out in her first round, but Danielle successfully made first round eliminations, narrowly missing out on making semifinal.

In the second half of the day was the team kumite matches. The men's team kumite, made up of Jamie, Bence, Matt, Masa, and Ravi, fought well against strong competition but unfortunately lost overall. The women's team kumite, made up of Danielle, Maeve, Eleanor, and Olivia, fought extremely well. Smashing their first round, they advanced to the second round. All was going well, with one point to each team, until an unfortunately timed head punch got Eleanor disqualified and lost the round for the team. Olivia then stepped in and the team won their repechage round, unfortunately losing 2-1 in the fight for bronze. This concluded the performances for Saturday, followed by a team dinner.

On Sunday, we were back on in force for day 2 of the competition. Starting the day with novice categories, Liming went out for her first time competing at kumite in the -55kg women's novice section. Fighting bravely, she unfortunately lost her first round then in the repechage round drew and narrowly lost by 3-2 flags.

In the senior men's -60kg, both Jamie and Tanmay successfully won their first rounds, narrowly missing out on their second rounds. Masa in senior men's -67kg and Dan, Matt and Ravi in senior men's -74kg unfortunately didn't advance to second rounds. In senior men's -84kg, Bence won his first round, lost his second round, then went onto repegarge round which he unfortunately lost despite a confident performance. In senior men's +84kg, Putu gave a great performance in his first round, winning 7-1, then unfortunately lost in his second round.

In the women's categories, Olivia lost in her first round in the senior women's -55kg section. In the senior women's -61kg, Maeve performed well in her first round but unfortunately was injured and unable to continue. Eleanor lost her first round while Beth won her first round, losing in her second round. In the senior women's +67kg category, Danielle fought very strongly, winning her first two rounds, narrowly losing her third round, then going on to win her repechage round to achieve bronze.

It was a successful weekend overall with good performances across the squad. Late Sunday night, CUKC came away with 5 bronze medals and a record for BUCS entrants.
