Competition Report

On Saturday 12th September the Shotokan Cup took place in Chesterfield. This is the national individual championships of the Karate Union of Great Britain.

The two entrants from CUKC were Francisco Martinez - Senior Men's Kumite

and Marcus Ingham - Senior Men's Kata

Francisco drew an ex CUKC student in his first fight - Mark Fuzelier . This was very unfortunate for Mark who had the joy of experiencing an ora maewashi geri from Francisco which was awarded ippon. In the elimination rounds amongst others he soundly beat two opponents from the Welsh national team and proceeded to the last four.

The match for a place in the final was eventually won by Joe Rawcliffe who went on to win the title.

Although Francisco was disappointed not to win, this was still an outstanding result. The photo below shows all four finalists with their medals. All four are part of the senior men's team travelling to Poland to represent England in the World Championships (WSKA) in two weeks.

Also competing in the senior men's individual kata was Marcus Ingham. This was a very high quality event including 3 World/European individual medalist. With an outstanding performance of Unsu Marcus came 5th just narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Congratulations to both Francisco and Marcus.
