Competition Report

The 48th National championship of the Karate Union of Great Britain took place at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Saturday 3rd May.

CUKC was represented by Francisco Martinez (Captain), Herve Vandekerckhove, Jerome Vandekerckove, Tegwen Ecclestone, Ilias Moutopolous and Georgia Poole.

Francisco and Herve were seeded in the senior men's individual kumite from last years championship results. Both succeeded in defeating their non seeded opponents but succumbed to their seeded quarter final opponents. Jerome triumphed convincingly over two opponents before losing to a third in a very close fought match.

Tegwen competed in individual kata without success however in the senior ladies individual kumite she triumphed convincingly over her first two opponents before losing to the veteran of the English kumite team Vicky Mulhearn.

Ilias competed in both individual kata and kumite but was unfortunate not to progress beyond the first round.

Georgia competed in the under 16 years girls kata event. She advanced confidently through the first three rounds but was beaten in the fourth round.

In the Senior Men's team kumite CUKC advanced to the quarter finals and faced Bargoed (a South Wales Team comprising 3 members of the Welsh National team). The match was drawn and Jerome was selected to fight against Mathew Hook a veteran of the Welsh International team. Jerome made short work of his opponent and CUKC advanced to the Semi finals against Leeds whose team boasted two England internationals (one of which sometimes trains with CUKC on a Monday). In a very close fought match Leeds advanced to the final and CUKC were awarded a well deserved bronze medal.

Congratulations to all CUKC team members.
