BUSA Karate Championships 2007

The British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Karate Championships are held annually, usually in or around Lent Term. University clubs from around the UK travel to the host university to compete against each other. Cambridge has had a long and very distinguished involvement at BUSA, picking up many medals and trophies over the years. This year the BUSA Championships were hosted by the University of Bath.

Competition Report

The CUKC squad spent this weekend in Bath for the biggest competition of our year, the British Universities Sports Association. On the first day was the kata competition and the squad got off to a great start with Steph and Andrew both performing very well to reach the repercharge finals in the women's and men's novice kata but were unlucky to miss out on the bronze. The team kata of Paul, Tom and myself finished off the day by making the final and beating Edinburgh with our performance of kanku sho and bunkai to bring home the cup.

On Sunday in the kumite competition we had another good day, Steph fought with great strength and technical skill to progress through the rounds and lost in the dying seconds to the eventual winner but kept going in the repercharge and won a well deserved bronze medal. Kai fought fantastically well in the senior heavyweight category to storm through to the semi finals but came up against a seasoned international and then was unlucky to miss out on the bronze in the repercharge final. I reached the open weight repercharge final but missed out on the bronze before battling through my weight category to reach the final which was uncontested to take the U70kg gold.

There were plenty more fantstic performances from the team to round off a year of hard work and great competing, congratulations all round!
